  • Engine: spin-on oil filter adapter

I was wondering if anyone has tried to adapt the cartridge-type oil filter for the Champion 6 to a spin-on oil filter? Anyone know of an adapter for this kind of conversion?

    Thanks!

Stude used a spin-on filter from about 1957. On an L-head 6 the base mounts under two head bolts at left rear of engine. Fram PB50 filter (or equiv) spins on upside down. I think Sasco has some of these kits.

Thank you for the suggestion. I called SASCO and they said they did not know anything about this, and said they did not believe such an item is available for this engine.

I was wondering if anyone has done this kind of conversion before, maybe using a kit designed for some other make of vehicle? While it's certainly not critical, it sure would make maintenance a lot easier, and cheaper.

I have to say I'm not sure why you want to do this. If you have a stock factory filter on your car the cartridges should be readily available from your FLAPS (Fram C3 or equivalent; C4 or equivalent if it is the optional, larger filter) and the cartridge type is less messy to change than the spin on. I actually added the optional C4 type filter to my '62 Daytona because I got sick of the mess the standard spin-on made when I changed it.

I have to agree with N8 on this. That said, I have one of the filter bases kicking around in the garage if you still want one. It came off a V8, so you'd have to make a simple, L-bracket to mount it to a flathead 6. OR.... you could mount it remotely and get some flex hoses to connect it.[^]

I agree, if I already had a cartridge type filter I wouldn't go to the trouble of changing to a spin-on. If you really want the spin-on, these kits were made for the L-head six Champion engine: AC-2848, AC-2938, AC-3064. See if any Stude parts vendors have any of those numbers in stock.
When an oil filter is mounted upside-down as these are, they probably should use a filter equipped with an anti-drain back valve. Fram PB-3413 is one, some searching in a filter book should turn up others. The alternative to that is to change the filter after the car has sat overnight, even though it is best to drain the oil pan when the engine is hot.

I guess at least part of the reason for wanting information about this is, that I have tried to find an applicable replacement cartridge filter, but could not find anything on the FLAPS's web sites, mostly because they don't list anything that old.

My car uses the larger F4 cartridge, so I guess the Fram C4 would be the correct replacement. Thanks very much for the information. I have seen a number of spin-on adapters on the web for other cars, and I have questioned whether this indicates that the newer design confers some additional protection for the engine, which is, of course, the reason for the filter in the first place.

I've been trying to put some of this info on my web site for just this reason, although I don't have a whole lot of pre-55 info up. But anyway the filters that will work on your car:

                Wix 51006
                NAPA 1006
                Baldwin P41

                Purolator L30034
                AC P209
                Fram C4P

Thanks Nate! I was having trouble finding a Fram C4 on anyone's web site. The Wix 51006 I did find, for $11.35, which is a bit pricey, but at least it's available. But, now I have some other options.

                  Thanks again.

I prefer Wix anyway... but that's a whole nother thread that could devolve into a flame war so I'll shut up now.

I KNOW this is an old thread, but Roscomacaw, do you still have that old filter base? I don't necessarily want to convert my cartridge filter to a spin on--but it won't quit leaking (more like squirting). No amount of gaskets, etc. can stop it. Short of that, does anyone know of a conversion kit for a straight six. It's a ZIP Van--and, yes, it does have a cartridge filter, even though that's now what the books show. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I don't know when/who installed your oil filter kit, but it needs a restrictor fitting in the input line to prevent over-pressurizing the filter can. They are normally just special brass fittings with a small hole (about .045") in it. And just so you know: Bob (Roscomacaw) rarely posts here any more.

Thank you so much for the info. I'll tell my mechanic and see if he can find a restrictor.

Soldered a .045 carb jet in fitting for orifice, keeps from losing volume of oil to filter. Bearings etc. need oil.
