  • Engine: Engine numbers

    I have 2 1951 Commander Starlight coupes for which I cannot determine the type of engine installed in each.
    One of the cars has the number E629 on the top right side of the engine looking in from the front of the car. On top of the engine on the left side there is the number 3 and underneath that number there is 527644. The other car has the number V403083 on the top right side of the engine looking in from the front of the car. On top of the engine on the left side there is the number 2 and underneath that number there is 535601.
    Thanks for help in clarifying this for me.

    This list may help, especially if either of the engines have been replaced with later versions.

    And it should be noted, all 1951 and most 1952 232 V-8s had the engine number stamped on a boss at the rear of the block to the left of the distributor. Later V-8s were stamped on the front to the right of the oil filler neck or water pump.

      V403083 is a 1957 Commander 259 cid V8. The other engine is probably earlier. As Rockne 10 stated; look back by the distributor for that engine number.

          Thanks also have a restored 1964 1,2 ton Champ (long bed) and an unrestored 1947 Champion business coupe. I had one of the ladder in high school and hope to begin restoration soon.
