  • Engine: Flathead six oil filler tube removal

How does one go about removing the oil filler tube ?
The engine section of the big yellow manual doesn't talk about it. I don't see any brackets, fasteners...

The core plug behind it...is basically gone, it just doesn't have enough sense to actually fall out..!

Just try to move it and pull it.

I tape a tow strap around the fill tube and wrap it as many times as you can, then wrap that with tape. Hook it over an engine hoist arm and jack straight up. No crushing or damage. Not even a mark on the paint.

I have used a vice grip slide hammer to pop them loose several times before.

          Hmm, interesting.
          Thanks for the info all.

Can't get my engine hoist and the car together (too much "stuff", and a car on jack stands) right now, will have to try other methods.

          Thanks again.

I'd try to hose clamp a short piece of metal strap or channel to the side of the fill pipe.
With a hole in the metal strap you could connect a slide hammer to pull it out.
For my Model A fill pipe I made a threaded aluminum plug to fit inside the top of the tube. Then I made a 2 piece aluminum clamp to clamp the pipe tight to the plug. My slide hammer pulls it out easily.

Another method I have used is a muffler expander with an eye bolt under the bolt head. Then tighten it to grip the inside of the tube then use a slide hammer.

Here's a picture of the puller I made, which pulls on the inside and outside of the pipe.
I wish I'd have thought of the muffler expander Brad just mentioned. That sounds like a good idea, and much easier to make.
