  • Engine: safe chain hoist location points on 170 I6 champion engine

I am pulling the engine and transmission on my 1950 R10. I am ready to pull the whole thing out through the front of the truck, but I am not sure what the most ideal points are to attach my chain to pull this out safely. Any suggestions on safe chain points?

Really? Through the valve cover? I thought about that, but then got scared thinking that the threads might give way under weight?

Please explain. You lost me. How will this happen on a flathead six cylinder engine? I have not worked on flathead sixes much and never owned one.

Worked like a charm. Used a front and rear head bolt. Thank you!!!!

Sounds to me like someone has installed a '61 to '64 170 OHV Six is this R Series Truck!

If it has a Valve Cover on top, it must be an OHV Six.

actually that would explain a lot? I received a build order copy from the studebaker museum. The engine numbers do not match. 74k vs 520k (current engine). Now I have not had much time in researching engines or transmissions or anything yet..... is it good or bad that its a 61 to 64 that i will most likely be rebuilding?

Is there a better powertrain that I should consider dropping in since everything is already pulled?

                  Not to derail this thread....

Read someplace it was a bad idea to pull out a short block (no head) with bolts threaded into 2 headbolt locations as it would cause the block to get pulled up around the bolt hole and thus no longer be flat and need to be planed. Head installed would prevent this of course.

I pulled it out as a long block assembly with transmission attached. Thats good information though, and I can see how that could be possible.
