  • Other: How to read the vin number

how do you read the vin number on a 1960 Lark. Did studebaker use letters in the ser number.

  • #2
Back then it was called a Serial Number instead of a VIN Number. It is located on the plate attached to the left front door post. On a 1960 Lark the number will start with 60S if it is a six cylinder car and 60V if it's a V-8. The numbers following that prefix are just the sequential build numbers. Others will chime in with more detail, I am sure.

The only thing to add to Dave's post is that the prefix will be 60SC or 60VC if it was built in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, rather than South Bend IN.

Too, the sequential numbers following those digits are unique to sixes and eights. I.e., they built both a 60S12345 and a 60V12345. Those numbers will not be found anywhere on the car's original engine, however; there is no such thing as a "matching numbers" Studebaker unless you mean that the numbers on the car match those on the Production Order. They also used a capital "I" rather then the number 1.

That is very important to know if you are having any issues with registering, insurance etc.
There are threads with factory documentation about the "I" for proof.

Since it IS the Numeric count of 6 or 8 Cyl. Studebakers coming down the Line in any given Year Model, it CANNOT be a "I", an "I" is used to indicate a "1" as Paul said in #4.

So do not let Motor Vehicle Dept. people mis-understand that, IF they get involved.

Here in Ar they will send a State Trooper to verify your Serial number if registering a long off the road vehicle. i explained the 1 vs I problem to the trooper and he replied "Makes Sense To Me " and he checked 3 projects that day and did the serial number verification bit all without issue thank goodness. The last post, # 13, is largely incorrect. As has been stated correctly in previous posts, the serial number on the tag located on the left door post, indicates whether it was built as a 6 or 8 cylinder car as well as year and if Canadian built. No other information can be gleaned from the serial number other than sequence.

On the firewall, there is a body tag which does indicate model number and trim level. Sometimes there are streamers that indicate options.

Using a vin decoding service will provide no useful info as vins were not used until 68 and were standardized in 81.
