  • No hibernation cave?

Back in the day, few of our Studebakers had indoor storage; we drove them after all!
Now that many have been brought back to a former glory we hope to keep them safe from occasional elements.
I wonder how many that take honors at shows and events spend their winters in those elements because the cars take precedence over building the garage.

I know Dave Warren, who has run his '55 at Mid-Michigan the past two years, beds it under a cover.

My own '51 missed a first place at Lancaster in 2008 by six points, and spends its winter under a blanket.

I wipe all the chrome with an oily rag, then put my car cover on it and keep it parked for the 6 to 7 months of winter inside the Roundtop Shelter.

I store my parts in the shed next to the car (on the left), but the squirrels have filled my stash with walnuts. Oh well.

I hope you don't have any soft parts in there. Squirrels got into my storage shed and they really tore up the cardboard boxes and almost anything soft (like insulation). While they aren't as destructive as mice (squirrels tend to always pee in the same places, rather than on everything), they are not good neighbors.

Yup, all the cardboard is done. They have it made. Lots of stainless so they can preen themselves in a "mirror".

I throw mothballs around my storage shed, but that doesn't seem to stop squirrels and chipmunks from leaving nuts inside the front fenders of my Studebaker.

Brad, interesting observation. I have a 2 car garage but only get one space. The wife's car get the other. It is only fair I guess. I keep the Commander in the garage because it is the oldest (1950) and is my car for shows, tours and just plain fun. Unfortunately, this leave my poor daily driver Champ truck out in the weather. I hope one day to provide it with some cover as well as a place to work on both vehicles. We'll see what the future brings.

Collector car insurance that requires that the vehicle be kept in a locked, enclosed garage dictates for many of us what stays inside and what stays outside.

My car has the same insurance as any other car on which I don't owe a penny: PLPD, fire and theft. I have no faith in insurance companies.

Neither do I Dave. Some of us even drive our vehicles in winter...

Somewhere I even have a pic of my poor Champ out in the snow. Don't know where it is presently.

You have enough faith to have comprehensive coverage. Go a little further and be fully protected...

I have what's required by law. My excess insurance is two martial artists, a .303 Lee-Enfield and a Jack Russell Terrorist.

Which of those provides protection in a collision?

The JRT The insurance company has an actuary, the buyer has no idea if the premium is appropriate to the risk. Add a commission and you've skewed the contract in favour of the insurer. A day at the races would void the collision coverage. If I break it, I'll pay for it.

Hibernation Cave or Insurance? What we talking? I have been fortunate enough to have a garage off and on over the years. When I didn't my cars or trucks endured the weather, whatever it was. In the last fifteen or so years I have changed my old garage (from my former business) into a playhouse. This is now where "The Saturday Night Special" lives, and it will not spend a night outside, unless it goes to a show, for probably the rest of my life. And, just to add, it will be driven almost daily, regardless of weather.
