Odd bracket hidden beneath the gas tank cover - 1925 Studebaker Standard Six

Found this unusual tubular bracket on the drivers side underneath the gas tank cover at the rear of a 1925 Studebaker Standard Six. There is this holder or bracket on the drivers side but nothing on the passenger side. Can anyone explain what it would have been used for??

The flat bar held the gas tank cover with rivets and bolts but the tube seems to have had some purpose but we could not figure it out

It is hard to figure this out, partly due to the parts that are no longer there. Is it perhaps a holder for the fill tube or vent pipe?

It's hard to tell from the photo. Does the rear spring bump into this bracket? Could it be bent out of its original configuration/angle/orientation?

After further thought, how about a holder for a tail light? Cars of this era usually came standard with only one tail light.

BINGO!!! That's what it is. The tail light/licence plate bracket is on a stalk about 6 inches above the gas tank cover. They are subject to vibration and fracturing. I'm intrigued by the bracket on the frame. I'm presuming there is one on the other side? There is no mention of them in my parts book and my 27 doesn't them.

Thanks guys for all the help. The problem with it holding a flag etc is that the gas tank cover completely hid it from sight until we took off that cover. The cover had no corresponding hole for said flagpole. It was well above the spring bracket too. It really is a mystery and only on the drivers side. It does not make any sense

Here are some more photos. Seems the flag pole idea was possible correct. I looked at the gas tank cover again and the hole is clearly seen in the photos. Thanks again for all the help.

My first thought was a support for a step, but then I decided this wasn't a model with a rumble seat.

Aw, c'mon, guys! This has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. I think SScopelli had his tongue firmly shoved in his cheek when he suggested the flag pole idea. Studegary was right on the money when he said tail light bracket. I tried to X2 that, but unfortunately referred to the flat stock bolted to the side of the frame as a "bracket" which threw people off the scent.

To get things back on track, the round bracket with the pinch bolt slot in it on the left frame rail is Studebaker part number 122898 and is officially called "tail lamp support bracket, LHC". The "tail lamp support, LHC" Studebaker part number 123074, (also referred to as "lamp bracket, LHC) and fits all models except the 4 passenger coupe or victoria, (part number 111264) is a pipe about 8 or 9 inches long and has a licence plate flange at the top. It is inserted through the hole in the gas tank cover and the pinch bolt tightened. The tail lamp (4 different part numbers) is bolted to the licence plate flange.

The piece of flat stock bolted to the side of the frame is not a Studebaker part.

Thank you again Terry. Seems this car either did not have that tail light pipe or it was removed a long time ago based on the rust in that location. I hope someone has a photo of what it should look like
