  • Trivia 1 ton Transtar MPG estimates place your guess

I drove the big truck just over 300 miles or so this week. It is a 1962 1 ton with custom rear box and canopy. It was sold as a cab and chassis and had a custom thick metal 9 foot box and canopy built for work in the oil fields. Originally, it was a 289, 4 speed, 5.13 TT rear end.

We have updated to a 4.56 TT and added a new process 5 speed OD. The 289 is bored .030 and has a WCFB 4 bbl and single exhaust. ( Stock build )

Any guess as to what this new MPG will be? The truck is 5900 pounds. It went around 300 miles with a 2000 pound trailer and towed a few cars. It had the trailer + a 5,000 pound Lincoln for half of the trip and had a parts truck for a few dozen miles. Half of the trip, it was just truck+ emty trailer.

It was 11,400 pounds with the parts/scrap truck on the back. The Lincoln was way heavier and was about 100 miles each way.!

Place your guess. This will drive studerich crazy, even he does not know the answer! (and it's his truck)

A good friend of mine's father bought a nearly identical '64 5-speed 289" new from Jaremko Motors here in Spokane and drove it 150,000 miles. My friend restored it and drove it another 50,000. During that time, it averaged 6-8 MPG loaded and 9-10 unloaded. On the highway unloaded, it would sometimes touch 12-13 MPG.

Well I'll be! I thought I left story problems in college but without certain info I'll guess

              Average speed

              30 - 9 mpg
              40 - 8 mpg
              50 - 6 mpg

My '55 E12 with the same 4.11 rear gear, but a 4-speed and 224" V8 averaged about 12.5 MPG and it only weighed 4000#.

Well, darn it! I thought we put the proper speedo gear in it, but the odometer says I only drove 156 miles. I know for sure I drove more than that. Now I have to mapquest the trip the best I can, and only guess myself.

All I know is that I used 18.5 gallons. I'll guesstimate the trip as best possible and post the results Sunday. I suspect about 9-10 MPG or better. It is about 85 miles each way, and I drove 20 miles around here.

With the huge Lincoln, I could only do 52-54 MPH because it started 'wagging' . With the truck on the back, I could do 6o-65 No problem. It was not a problem to get on the freeway. I question the MPH and odometer now.

I was running 2400 @ 50 MPH and about 2800 @ 60 MPH and held my own in traffic.

Well I know that it's ORIGINAL Carter WCFB 4 Brl. Carb. that I am pretty sure has NEVER been opened since it was installed in '62, does get better mileage when the Secondaries are not kicked than a 2 Brl. but the Truck Body Builder 6 Ft. X 9 Ft. Pick-up Box and Aluminum and Steel Camper Shell do make it very heavy at 5800 Lbs. And it is not running 4.09 Gears which it probably could not pull well, loaded in 5th. Overdrive, but it has a Twin Traction 4.56 Ratio Dana 70.

Mostly on Interstate 5, I think Mike probably had it at 50-55 MPH. most of the time.

So I guess it COULD average about 11.5 MPG. on Unleaded 87 Oct. Regular.
