By golly Mark, you're right! I knew those '57 to '59's had a different panel than my '62 Transtar, (it has the full gauge panel they used in '54-'56) but never paid much attention to the speedo. I guess I just ignore things I do not like! Never liked that idiot light panel with the way large fuel & Temp. gauges. Funny thing though, my son Mike's '57 would be just the truck for me because it has a very complete, narrowed '62 GT Hawk dash! [^]

Rich - take a close look at your brother's '57... all 57 to 59 C-Cabs (if they are stock) have 100 mph speedos... suppose that was to make up for the lack of an ammeter and oil pressure gauge!

Ed is a '62 Champ with 3-speed on the tree. No OD. He has a 259 (weak at that) and does about 60MPH without much trouble. I usually cruise 50-55 and sometimes get up to 60. I have, on rare occasions had him up to seventy on I-5, and the motor was still pulling along strong. Of course, at that time Ed had a 289 which has since given out and been replaced with the current 259. Being that I live in the mountians, grades (and steep ones at that) are a common occurance. Ed takes them in stride. The only time I run into trouble is when I'm towing a heavy item (like my '56 wagon). Still, on the paved road, Ed even handles heavy loads with alacrity.

What I've gone around the barnyard about here is that a Champ can top 60MPH without struggling with a standard 3-speed and a V8. A 289 is better than a 259 (obviously), still, he goes.

In the '50s and '60s, it was not uncommon for commercial vehicles to have speed governors. Have you checked to see if your truck has a governor installed? Removal of a governor would be an easy "fix."

I used to have a 63 T cab some twenty years ago when I was working at a brand X dealership. I had overdrive and 4. something gears in the differential and once or twice a week I would wind up in a race on the way home against someone in a Ford or Chevie. At around 90 mph I would shift it into Overdrive and the race was usually over before I topped out a 120.

If you only have a standard three speed then if would be prudent to do an overdrive transplant. There are plenty of us around that can walk you through the rough spots so you can get that truck out of the highway.

If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....
