  • 63 Champ

My grandfather just gave me a 63 champ pick up. It has been restored by him for the past couple of years. He had to put a new engine into it. Everything works just fine except it will not go over 50 miles per hour. I am not at all very educated when it comes to this sort of stuff, so I was hoping you smart people out there might be able to help out a fellow stude owner. Thanks in advance.

First thing that I would check is to see if the throttle linkage is open the carb completely. Second would be to check the timing.

Might check the rear end ratio too!

Does it have an overdrive? What engine/transmission/rear end combo do you have?

Well, kiddo, welcome to the club. There's a tag on the differential cover (back of the punkin) that will give the ratios. Perhaps some other wag, uh[:I], I mean, expert can give you the location of the same on the tranny.

Have you joined the club yet? You will also need the manuals for your truck. Check with Gramps to see if he has them. These manuals are also available on CD very economically. We have members of all ages, though tending to the coger group, like any car club. The club magazine is top notch, packed full of useful tips and information. So, again, welcome and good luck with that Champ.[8D] I really like mine.

How is it behaving at top speed? Does the engine sound like it's racing or does it just run out of power? How does it behave otherwise? Does it run well and seem like it has plenty of pep or does it feel really sluggish? Is it a six or a V8?

As has already been said, many things could come into play here. First I would take the suggestions concerning timing and throttle linkage. I would then check on the type of running gear you have:
                            a. Type of transmission three or four speed and if a three speed does it have an overdrive?
                            b. Rear end ratio. Some of those were pretty steep and would not
allow speeds much over 50 mph.
                            C. Like Jeff asked -- is it a 6 or 8 cylinder engine? A low geared
6 cylinder truck will not be a very fast one.
                            D. Is the truck a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, etc.? The bigger trucks
may well have an engine, transmission and rear end set up that
does not lead to top end speed.

I have a '61 Champ that I love dearly. I think you will enjoy yours as well. Keep asking questions, join the SDC and your local SDC Chapter and you will find lots of help. Studebaker folks are some of the best in the automotive hobby. Welcome!
