Even as a kid, I never thought a pickup was a "serious" truck if it had whitewall tires. One of my uncles had a 1960's truck with wide whitewalls. It was a red and white Chevy truck with logos advertising his Esso service station. It was not a serious truck, in terms of "truck work." It mainly served as his commuter vehicle for the couple of miles from home to work, and as an advertisement while puttering about town.
