  • 11234 -- Definitely a picture in freezing rain. Perhaps the Stude driver just is being cautious. It's not a great idea to be close behind another car on an icy hill. The driver definitely should have his headlights on.

Probably the line has formed because the police car has been driving at a slow, safe speed to keep other drivers from being idiots and ending up in the woods, or worse.

Not sure? I see what looks like a 50s Business Coupe (far right near walkway) and a white 55 car front end mid left near the big black Caddy?

            Good eye, John.

I saw the business coupe and missed the [probably] 1955 sedan pointing toward the Cadillac's LF fender. BP

I see at least two in the lower photo, parked almost right next to each other, separated by an early-'50s Oldsmobile with a Dagwood, plus a beat-up bullet-nose 4-door with a mis-matched LF fender high in the photo, almost dead-center, parked along the curb.

              Any others?

Yes...another dark colored Lark across the lane from the two other Studebakers you mentioned...in addition...there's another '59-'60 (?) custom painted lark with a dark roof & lower section separated by a light color in the mid section. I'll not give the specific location...happy hunting.

Are you not mistaking that Hillman for the Lark?

I could be...'cause I wouldn't know a Hillman from any other shoe box??? But...from my recliner, on my monitor, it sure looks LARK to me. But...to find more than a couple of Studebakers in a huge crowd of cars as in this picture is already a sad view of Studebaker's precarious position in the market.

                    • I think Craig is correct, John; I believe the car you describe, if it is the one that would hit the LR of the Corvair or the LF of the '56 Chevy if it backed up, is a Hillman. BP

                      • Well, guys...I'll surrender to the Hillman opinion. Around here, Studebaker sightings were pretty rare...Hillmans...even more obscure.

                        • This specific two-tone I believe identifies it as a Sunbeam Rapier Mk1, about 1957. Same family as Hillman. Most of the Rootes cars shared a lot of body panels.

I have always liked Hillmans, but this one is especially nice looking. My dad bought a Hillman Husky (a little station wagon kind of thing) while we were stationed in Austria. Dad insisted on bringing it back to the States. We drove it to California with Mom and Dad in the front and my brother and me in the back seat. I was in second grade and my brother was about three years old. Believe it or not we used that car for two trips to Omaha and back. We took it overseas with us when Dad got stationed in Asmara, Eritrea. We and that little car really got around (but it didn't make it back to the States.

                              • The car in the photo is a Sunbeam Rapier, also from the Rootes group as Singer & Hillman.
