I never noticed this before, but the Lark coming towards the camera has an accessory driving light!

I remember something about requiring a center mounted day/night light during that time period, but it never went over well. What I noticed was the flag at half-staff. Assuming the flag was raised and lowered daily in accordance with proper protocol, the 30 days of half-staff for JFK's death would have ended on Dec 21st, which might help date this photo. Yes, as I recall this was the day they announced the plant closing.

The Lark is like Rudolph, leading the lost men out of the plant. It must have been a solemn Christmas in South Bend that year.

I was 9 years old when the plant closed. To this day I remember the announcement on the CBS news that evening and although I had no great attachment to Studebaker at that time I recall feeling bad that this country had lost a long time car manufacturer. Funny the things you remember.

I believe this memorable image to be Dec 9th & the last day. I still have my cablegram copy signed by Byers Burlingame dated Dec 9th also. Each employee at our Melbourne assy plant for Studebaker received one.

That is some parking lot with a 1958 Edsel, 1958 Pontiac Bonneville hardtop and 1957 & 1958 Ford Thunderbirds.

How 'bout across the street: two cars to the left of the white Dodge(?) business coupe. I see a '49 Starlight coupe. Also see a DKW hardtop two car to the right of the dodge.

9806 was taken looking in almost the same direction but on the other side of Bunker Hill in Down town L.A. From #9698 on page 243. Those parking lots were for lawyers and others that were going to the courts or the hall of records.
