  • Unlike many period photos we discover, something is known of this photo. It was taken April 6, 1941 at my paternal grandparents' farm in North Judson IN. Because cousin George Krem's mother is my father's older sister, this location is also cousin George's maternal grandparents' farm.

I'm pretty sure the man in the photo is my Dad; he was a "Ford man" and he would have been 24 years old at the time.

There's more to be said about the Champion coupe in the photo, so I'll let George post those particulars. BP

    • Bob,

I think you hit the wrong key, this would be George's maternal grandparents' house.

                  • Unlike many of the photos here, a good deal is known about this one:

                    To wit:

                    1. The photo was taken in the summer of 1964 in front of The Airport Motel west of South Bend on Lincolnway.

                    2. At the time, South Bend's Airport Motel was owned and operated by my Aunt Libby and Uncle "Buster" Currier. Libby is not in the photo (she may have taken it), but Uncle Buster is square in the middle of the photo; darker shirt than most and with his mouth partially covered by the youngster in front of him. The youngster in front of Uncle Buster is my younger brother Russell. On either side of Russell are our cousins Brett (taller one) and Blake Currier.

                    3. I am on the far right in the photo; hands crossed in front of me to avoid the obvious physical embarrassment of a teenage Studebaker male enthusiast in the presence of a genuine Super Hawk (more later on that...).

                    4. Next to me (white shirt with narrow black tie) is our Uncle Jerry Palma. At the time, Jerry was a full-time Studebaker salesman at Snider Auto Service in Indianapolis. I think this photo was taken on the 4th of July 1964, in which case Jerry would deliver The Plain Brown Wrapper to cousin George Krem about a month later. Cousin George is in the back row, second from left. I think it is George's father, also George Krem but with no middle name, on the far left, back row, his face partially hidden by the gentleman with white hair in front of him. The gentlemen with white hair and white shirt is the oldest Palma son; Joseph Palma Jr.

                    5. To the right of Joseph Palma Jr. is my father, Lumir Palma. Dropping to the back row, behind my father, is my brother Stanley. Next to Stanley is the tallest person there, our cousin Marc Palma, Joseph Palma Junior's son.

                    6. Studebakers: You can see the rear of Jerry's 1964 Horizon Green Commander 4-door. It was Jerry's "demo" from Snider; a six with overdrive.

Also visible is Uncle George's full-package, Bordeaux Red 1964 Super Hawk R2/Powershift, less than a year old. Sadly, it was used up driving in the Chicago salt and rusted away poste haste. The Serial Number plate still exists, however, so it may reappear some day!

My take-away from that day was Uncle Jerry and Uncle Buster having a heated discussion about Studebaker. Jerry maintained they were good cars and Uncle Buster allowed that he was glad they went out of business in South Bend because the city was now rid of that industrial albatross!

I didn't think those were very kind words from a guy who bought a brand new 1959 Lark Regal wagon, black with red interior and a pretty car with six/overdrive, and beat it to death hauling around his family of six (four kids). I thought he got doggone good service out of it considering how many hard miles he put on it as a traveling salesman back in '59 and '60...at least until a service station attendant didn't firmly install the spin-on oil filter and it ran out of oil.
