  • Here is my '57 Silver Hawk parked at a Beach approach following a Tropical Storm , probably in 1964 or 65 .

    • From The Smithsonian on-line monthly report, The Disneyland Parking Lot in the late 1950s.

(Was The Chicken Hawk at Disneyland before Ted Harbit bought it in late 1961? I dunno; it was originally light green!):

And what is the car immediately to the left of the Pontiac Woodie up front; the car partially obscured by the aluminum "phone" pole?

            • Thanks. Interesting, I think, that it does not have a name out front.

I have seen some pictures of North Carolina dealerships, but not this one. I would really like to know what and were it is. I have begun some research on dealerships in North Carolina, specifically the Sandhills region of the state. I have been really surprised by the lack of pictures available. This is espcially true for long time family owned dealerships. I would have thought there would be a pictures somewhere, but several have told me there are none. What a shame.

If you are saying that is in Durham, NC it would be Old Hickory Motors Inc. at 3341 Roxboro Rd.

It does say that at the top of the page in the link given above the original photo. You might have missed it up there.

Great find! I love the 'Then and Now' comparisons, especially as in this instance where both pictures are from nearly the same angle, and side by side for comparison. The old building and the one next to it are pretty similar to what they were back then, but the rest of the street sure has changed.

Thanks for the continued great pictures!

                          • That is a great photo of Old Hickory Motors! Some nice merchandise out front for sure...especially that R-powered GT!
Nice-looking building too. Sure looks like the dynamic of the neighborhood has changed in 49 years, but where hasn't it, sadly?

The big, vertical "Studebaker" sign is the identical one that hung on a pole out at the street at my small hometown Stude dealer. Face of the sign was dark blue with a light blue surround.

                              • Just to veer a bit off topic... On Aarrggh's post #412 of the Dealership. What is going on with the store next to it? I see chain link fence/gates closing off the front of the building that has a awning over them. Appears to be a grocery store from the signage. Also, some benches?? out front. Was there a walk up diner/lunch counter in the front of the store and they had those gates to close it off when the store is closed? Maybe a "southern" regional thing as I've never seen a setup like that before. Just wondering.
