The Indiana Dealer number in this case is 997. The numerals after the M designate the individual plate number. Smaller dealers might have, say, only 10 plates, so their largest number after the M would be 10.
Larger dealers would have more plates, but 55 is a terribly high number and would be for a really large dealer or, in this case, a manufacturer who needed a "dealer" plate for testing and demo purposes.
Today, Manufacturer Plates are issued and would be denoted as such, but the plates in the above photo are 1951 when no such plates were issued.BP
