As I remember, Studebaker had some folks try to drive one or more of their cars from the valley to the coast, or up the coast (not sure which) without using any roads. I'm probably remembering this all wrong but that is what come to mind. You might try doing a search for Oregon, Coast, Newport and see what you come up with.
I think the "thread" Ed is referring is actually an article written by Andy Beckman in his Off the Records column in TW. In that article the car (a Flanders 20) was being driven from Wenatchee (I think) in Washington up to Hazelton in British Columbia. It basically followed the route of what is Highway 97 today and was several hundred miles in length.

A little sleuthing has revealed that the Flanders (same car?) in the above illustration was being driven from Newport to Siletz Bay (Lincoln City) on the Oregon coast. In both cases it was done to demonstrate the need for a road in their respective areas.

      • February 1942 photo of "Studebaker workmen mounting engine to truck chassis" from The Chicago Tribune World War II archives:

I'm not questioning the date, but February 1942 was only two months after Pearl Harbor, so I'd say "the boys" were getting right with it!

'Wonder if those two men were later drafted or volunteered and would have been replaced by women in a couple years? BP

        • No Studebaker vehicles, but the caption to this photo from The Chicago Tribune WWII archives said, "Workmen install pipe tunnels and an electrical substation at The Studebaker Engine Airplane Factory at Cicero and Archer Avenues in Chicago in March 1941." (Again, this was nine months before Pearl Harbor. Ramping up, I'd say!) BP (These photos from a link provided by Duane Miller. Thanks, Duane.)

Great point Bob. Already, depending on which computer I'm using...I'm hesitant to click on this thread.
