Well after many years of milking the six for all it had left, and dreading the cost of a rebuild. Craigslist came to the rescue just picked up a complete 289 w/auto trans and all the accessories from a 64 hawk for $500. Got to hear and see it run before he pulled it out, it's a strong eng runs like a top. Will post pics as soon as the camras done charging.

My only current problem I have seen is does anyone know if the rod from the gas pedal to the linkage on the block is diffrent on a hawk tha a lark? Everything has lined up and fit but that little rod seems a bit to short. And is anyone in need of a power steering pump it came with that as well and I have no need for it.

The different wheel base of the Hawk causes a number of parts issues; none of them difficult to address. Best to have your Chassis Parts Catalog handy so you know what little things you will need.Brad Johnson,

Looks like an easy swap with the front sheet metal removed.
However, I thought the 6 cylinder cars came with a lighter differential (Dana 27) versus the V8 differential (Dana 44). I have heard there might be problems running the 289 through the smaller differential. Perhaps the auto trans might reduce the 'shock' to the rear wheels from the more powerful V8?

No, the Dana 27 won't take any V8 abuse - just one hard launch with wheel hop and it would shred.
Maybe, get everything in, up and running first. The rear axle can be changed any time at no additional cost or effort for waiting.

Another little problem you can fix later is that "A" Arm mounted Front Stabilizer Bar! A V-8 would be both frame and "A" Arm mounted for the proper anti-dive required with the heavier engine, of course the Springs will also be flat after the install and can be replaced with V-8, along with the Brakes and rear end after the Engine Install.
A V-8 changeover is always cheaper with a V-8 Parts car for parts.StudeRich

Hey 44, might want to go back to the guy that sold you the engine and get the rear axle assembly. Even better, get the entire corpse and stash it until your swap is done, so you can grab odds and ends as you need them. Makes the job infinitely easier!

I may find out about the rear end the guy pulled the drive train to put a SBC combo in it dont know why with a perfect running 8 already what ever his loss my gain lol. So far the accelerator rod is the only problem. The driveshaft and everything else fit fine. I will eventually upgrade the brakes and rearend but for now I just rebuilt the whole brake system master cyl ,wheel cyls new lines and shoes., Much easier with the engine and front clip removed. I put a universal floor mount shifter in it it was originally a 3 on the tree. I do need someone to confirm the shift pattern for me though it is PNDLR correct and starts in 2nd all time if i read correctly. Thanks for the postive comments and feedback guys.

I'd keep the 27 in there till you find the 44 you really want (i.e gear ratio, flanged axle) The 27 in my lark has taken all the abuse i could give it. And i have driven it hard at times. I was told it was a 3;73 when i bought it but was under it the other day and saw a 3:54 tag on it. it is a TT.101st Airborne Div. 326 Engineers Ft Campbell Ky.

..agree on the 27 out back...as long as you don't hammer it..all will be fine...And you won't want to drive it too hard anyway due to the 6 banger suspension left in there...drive it nicely and you'll go forever...wait until some cheap V8 suspension stuff comes alive...as a matter of fact, I have 64' Cruiser V8 front springs you could have cheap from a 40K car that was totalled....but I'm in Mass...GL
