Looking for Transmission
I need a truck
3 speed transmission with attached overdrive. The transmission I need says T 86 E-1A. I think the overdrive will show R10. Does anyone have this to sell to me? Please also read my follow up post on this series of posts, it gives more detail. The overdrive I need comes from a late 40's to mid 50's truck. The pictures show the overdrive I need. Unfortunately, there are quite a few variations of the T 86 E-1A which complicates this.

I had no idea this could get so complicated but here goes. I mentioned initially that I need a T86E-1A. The vehicle is a 6 volt 1953 2R5 with a 1951 car Champion engine. I say car because the engine's serial number is 758205. Attached to it is a truck bell house of (I'm guessing) late 1940's to mid 1950's vintage I believe I need a short tail overdrive. The transmission I took out of the truck is a T86E1 and is not made for overdrive. That transmission's input shaft has a 5/8 inch diameter tip which is about 1 1/8 inch long. The ten splines are 1 1/2 inches long and the splined shaft is approximately 1.124 inches diameter. The rear part of the input shaft is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. As for the bolt pattern, the horizontal bolt holes are 5 15/16 inches apart on center. The vertical holes are 5 11/16 inches apart on center. That is what I have. Does anyone have an overdrive/transmission that will work in my truck?Last edited by truckguy; 10-04-2017, 02:18 PM.

Some Trannys with T86E Cases will actually BE T-90 Truck Transmissions with a Lower 1st. and 2nd Gear and SOME will have the Champion small Six Input Shaft that you need.
So counting the Low Gear Teeth may be one of the Few ways to know exactly what you have, after of course weeding out the Long Tail slide-in Driveshaft Yoke Car versions.
If this pickup is going to be a "Cruiser" and not a "Hauler" a Car Trans. should work fine, the only problem there is that small Six Cars got the tiny little T-96 Borg Warner, not very strong and probably won't bolt up to your Truck Clutch Housing.
Yes, until you or someone does a whole lot of Measuring on the Replacement Unit it WILL be confusing, but can be figured out.Last edited by StudeRich; 10-04-2017, 03:27 PM.StudeRich

If using it as a truck, the wide ratio T90 version is the one to have. If it's a hobby vehicle which will not be loaded as a truck, then the closer ratio car T86 will work just fine.
Does anyone else think a '56 car T86 overdrive will work with his truck bellhousing? It's short tailshaft, fixed yoke and the 12-volt solenoid can be swapped for a 6-volt.

Why not just get a car bell housing and the car transmission? Seems like going from a car engine to a truck bell housing and then back to a car transmission is asking for problems.
I have an OD trans and bell housing from a 50 Champion that I would part with.sigpic1966 Daytona (The First One)

It takes quite a bit of studying the Two different Models Chassis Parts Catalogs to determine what works and what does not, unless you have quite a lot of "hands on experience" with many years of Studes.
The suggestion in Post #10 would be a good and simple one all except... the Truck Clutch housing is just SO majorly different and so are the Rear Mounts that it makes this "Simple" swap very difficult requiring "Fabrication Skills".
I can remember several R Series Trucks that came into the Dealerships I worked at with V8 Car Engine "Conversions" that were so bad the owner gave up and brought them to the factory trained experts to replace half of the parts with New CORRECT 1955 and on Pickup parts.
I guess it was because AL Gore had not yet invented the Internet, so they had NO help!StudeRich
