dual point distributor

  • Electrical: dual point distributor

    I recently purchased a 1963 R-2 Avanti that had been stored for 8 years. Replaced coil, condensor and dual points. Only one set of points is sparking. Someone said that is normal; the second set will spark when vacuum advance engages at higher RPM. Can someone help me? thanks, David H.

    Vacuum advance has nothing to do with it. One set makes, the other breaks to provide a longer dwell time than single points. Suggest a Shop Manual to help you set it up and troubleshoot.

      I agree with Jack totally, however, specifically relating to old time racing, hard to imagine it applies here, two points were sometimes used in a modified single point dizzy on a two way switch to ground, so the drag racer could select way more advance at higher revs. They must have had enough time to select switches back then ! (1960's-70's) Do not try this on the street folks !

        Isolate the set of points that arc with a match book cover or similar so they don't touch. Engage starter and watch for spark at second set. If it sparks you're good, if not check the ground wire is installed between the set of points furthest from the vac advance under the mounting/adjustment screw and jumper wire is installed between point sets at the posts where the condenser fits on one set and jumps to the other. See the diagram page 10 of the workshop manual. If either is missing--no run--especially the ground wire which can be broken from age. Since you do have an arc on one set the lead into the distributor from the coil should be okay so double check you installed the jumper and it is making contact on both ends with the insulated post ( and it's no broken internally or cracked and grounding to the housing). Has nothing to do with vacuum advance, all dependent on the cam in the distributor moving the points open and closed, and power to the first set of points and getting that juice to the second set by the jumper wire. If you don't have a repair manual --get one, available from vendors. Hope this helps some.

          The idea behind the two point system was so that the dwell would be longer the above writer is correct that one set of points makes the circuit to charge the coil and the other points brake the circuit because the longer the charge goes into the coil before being discharged the stronger voltage to the plugs.

          The old Delco distributors that had the window to adjust the points would change the timing one degree for every degree of dwell change.
