  • Brakes: Transtar Wheel Cylinders

    ALL:
My 1956 3/4 ton pickup needs new wheel cylinders. The front cylinders have a casting number FD8393 which is Wagner Lockheed Part Number FD9457. The rears are casting number FD9178, which is Part Number FD9177.

They are so locked up I can't rebuild, so I'm looking for new replacements.

    Thanks!
    Ken

    Hi Ken,
Hijacking your post a little here maybe but I have a question for you---did you get the rear drums off? I was told you need a special puller for those---if so, where did you get that?

I am in the same area as you in terms of working on a truck. Do you have any pictures?

Sure, I will attach a few and also have a link below to my album. No special tool required...just lots of patients with the rusty cone washers embedded in the axle hub.

I like the pics and probably would have asked for those but I guess I meant--how about your truck you are working on? Mine is a 57 Transtar.

Oh, OK. Mine is a '56 Transtar Model E12 - 3/4 ton. Its been a fun and enlightening experience, especially since I have never restored anything in my life! It is mostly original, with a 224 CI V8/160 HP/4 Barrel Carb. At some point, the 3 speed transmission was swapped for a New Process 5 speed coupled to a Dana 60 rear end with 410 gearing. If you haven't already, you should order the build sheet from the Studebaker Museum. As long as you have the VIN number, you're good to go.

so you have a 3 speed on the column? I also see you have the "hill holder". I read about that in the manual. Do you have any pictures of your whole truck?

                  jsmith-
Note that vpi992000 has an E12 3/4-ton. Brake drum removal is completely different on the 1/2-ton trucks. You need the hub puller as outlined in the shop manual and shown in another thread.

Not sure on availability, However, the small machine shop I use, just redid some rear wheel cylinders from a 1951 2 ton Fire Truck. (which also sports disc brakes in the front) <G> Dan can pretty much do anything, and is reasonable in prices. If needed, he can make new pistons and re-bore the cylinder.

Here's some pictures of the truck when I first got it. You'll see its actually a floor shifter - at some point the 3 speed came out and the 5 speed was installed.

After working off and on for over a year, I'm about ready to pull the engine and blast the frame.Got body work to do, engine rebuild, then hopefully this winter, I'll start the rebuild.
