  • Fuel System: electric choke conversion

Happy Holidays! I've done a search and couldn't find an electric choke conversion for my 1960 Stromberg WW carb. Does anyone know where to get one? I have a manual choke conversion I haven't installed yet but would prefer an automatic. Any leads would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Go back again and use the term "automatic" rather than "electric." I believe "automatic" chokes use a "thermal" spring rather than electricity to operate.

Thanks Jcarey for the information. Never thought to try automatic. Wish me luck!

        electric choke up-date

It seems there are no electric or automatic conversions for the Stromberg WW carb that I could find. I found Mike's Carb shop on line. He's got lots of parts and kits for the Stromberg line but all I could find was a 2 barrel carb vacuum pull off for 70's type. No go. Guess I'll have to install my hand choke kit as I want to avoid the heat riser system as it would be detrimental in the desert heat. Oh, well...just like old times. Anyone else have any ideas?

If you have a properly operating Heat Riser Valve, it should not cause excess heat. The Automatic Chokes have always worked reasonably well for us on our 3 Stromberg WW equipped '57 Commanders.

However, the WCFB Carter 4 Barrel DOES actually work better, because the fast idle cam is much better.
My '62 Transtar's WCFB has never been opened in 53 years since New and still works fine.

I don't think a Automatic Choke search will net anything, you will just find what you already have on your Stromberg WW, a Thermal Automatic Choke!

Years ago, I purchased a couple electric choke kits for a Ford 2 bbl. I believe they would fit any carb that used that familiar black indexed choke spring cover. They were also more precise than the ones you get today, as the ground was bolted under a head bolt and the choke would ONLY open fully when the heads got warmed up. I might still have one but will have to look over the rest of the week.

If you don't have a thermal sleeve on your hot air pipe, that will help the choke to open quicker.
I added a sleeve to my 1950 Champion, even though the choke tube is only about 7 inches long, and it helped a lot.

I've seen the factory jobs for GM Quadrajets (which really work GREAT), and of course the electric choke is optional for the Carter (Edelbrock) AFB, but I've never seen one on a Stromberg WW.
