  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Poor guage illumination

    Hi all,
The numerals and increment lines in my '51 Commander's instrument cluster has lost its ability to retain it's 'glow'. (I'd expect many of us are in the the same boat). I had an idea of installing a small light behind the gear selector block (it's and auto), so rigged up some lights and a motorcycle battery, it lit up the dash OK but also reflected off the inside of the windscreen, so have discounted it. It did have an interesting effect on the gauges - when I turned off the light (a bright LED), the gauges glowed really well for about 30 seconds then went back to nothing.

So, my question is - has anyone had success with using different lamps to replace the existing 2 watt lamps? (my Commander has been converted to 12 volts)
If not my next idea is to remove the coloured inserts that the lamps go into, that was designed to 'excite' the luminosity of the markings, (which now doesn't work as they have lost the light retaining ability). I'd really prefer not to remove the instrument panel - done it before to fit a 12 volt Runtz for the fuel gauge, what a bugger of a job !

Does anyone have any 'bright' ideas ;-)

Somewhere, in my stash of "don't know why I really bought that" stuff...I have some LED's that are "diffuser" style. They are supposed to spread the beam wider than the tiny pin-point types we see most. Some "life event" got in the way, and I don't know where the bulbs are hidden away. It was my intention to install an appropriate resistor for my 6 volt system and replace those little dash light bulbs.

I don't think your gear selector position is a fair test for how they would perform inside the stock glass bulb retainers. You were providing "direct" light to the gauges. Installing them into the proper position behind the gauges will be somewhat "indirect" as designed. I have one car in which I replaced the glass bulb cover with green plastic from a pop bottle. It is brighter, but not as "cool" looking as I had hoped.

Why not use ultra-violet LEDs? That would be ideal

My 1950 Champion had the same problem a year and a half ago when I bought the car. It was restored about 21 years ago and almost never driven, but left covered up in a garage. After I bought the car I was wondering what to do to make the gauges light up the way my 1950 Commander gauges lit up back in 1970. After driving the car for a few months I left it out in the bright sun for a day while visiting my brother 110 miles away. That night the gauges lit up like they should. So, I guess the glow material needs to have bright sunlight once in a while to keep it rejuvenated. Leave the car parked in the bright sun and see if that helps.

Question; is the black light filter in the dash lamp lenses in the glass or an applied surface? Can just enough of it be scratched off to admit unfiltered light to the gauges? This may over-illuminate the dash but a rheostat from a Lark model could be introduced to the circuit. Just a thought.

Thanks for the link and the idea. I'm all up for stealthy upgrades and mods.
