  • Brakes: RTH Needed: Master Cylinder Mounting Spacers 59 Lark

    Hi All!
I just received my new master cylinder in from SI and I want to confirm BEFORE installation where the spacers are SUPPOSED to be. There are (2) spacers avbout 3/8" - 1/2" thick that go on the bolts that hold the master cylinder to the frame. I want to have my son install it while I'm at work in order to get it on the road quickly.

This MC has been off and on this car so many times (especially when I was young) and I am not sure if they are in the correct location. I have always had rapid failures of the MC on this car, and i think it is due to alignment of the push rod to the MC and causing a side pressure (misalignment) to one side, causing excessive wear on the piston and cylinder.

Can anyone verify the CORRECT location for the spacers? Are the both BEHIND the MC between the MC and the frame? Is the front one behind the MC and the rear one to the outside of the MC? I could not locate a clear diagram in the FSM unless I totally missed it.

BTW: Kudos to SI for FAST shipment! I ordered online at 10:00 AM on Monday, expecting the parts to be pulled and shipped for Tues. or later to be delivered on Thurs. They shipped them on Monday and arrive today (Wed)!!! Fantastic!

The Chassis Parts Catalog is ALWAYS your best friend when it comes to Photos of Parts and their relationship to each other.
Basically the Shop Manual has few helpful Photos.

The '59-'64 Chassis Parts Catalog shows a blowup of the F,W,Y,J,D & P Body, Master Cylinder Installation, showing the Frame curving IN to widen at the Rear of the M/C area, requiring a Thick Washer AT THE FRONT, the Quantity is shown as: "AS Required".

Also there are completely different Installs for Power Brakes, Hill Holder and Auto Trans. vs Std./O.D. all shown in the Front of the Brake Section.

Thanks StudeRich! I was hoping you'd answer!

I guess I was looking in the general shop manual and didn't think about the Chassis manual having more info and a better exploded view. I will check that out tonight.
