  • Rear Axle: 57 Commander rear axle shaft puller

Does anyone have a picture of a HM-931 rear axle shaft puller?

I think Harbor Freight has a slide hammer at a reasonable price.

I was planning on renting a slide hammer from Advance but curious as to what the puller looks like.

Look in the Shop Manual. I know that the '59 thru '64 Shop Manual shows the 'special tools' on the last page of each section. Not sure about the earlier Shop Manual, but worth a look.

Unfortunately not in the 56 manual with the 57 supplement Paul. There are some tools shown in repair illustrations but no lists at the end of sections.

So you already have the wheel, brake drum and hub removed? Now you just need to get the axle out of the housing? A common practice is to just set the drum/hub backwards on the axle, then thread the axle nut on several turns and use the drum/hub as a slide hammer to pop the axle out.
I can scan the illustrations if you want them, but HM931 is just a slide hammer and an assortment of 3 threaded sleeves to fit all the axles. The later set J7935 looks like the same 3 sleeves, but the slide hammer is a separate item J2619.

I borrowed a puller kit from Advance Auto part, 3-4 slides of the slide hammer on each axle....both out in less than 5 minutes. Thanks guys.
