  • Electrical: Bad Solenoid or Key Switch?

    Hey Folks!

Thought I would bounce this off some of you, before I start replacing parts.

    66 Cruiser w/ 6 cylinder engine

Will not Crank when turning the key. Amp gauge shows a discharge, but no crank.

Engine will crank if I use a jumper button across the solenoid.

So, replace the key switch or the solenoid?

    Any thoughts would help!

Is it a auto trans? If yes, check safety neutral switch first

Use a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the "start" post on the solenoid. If the engine cranks, you have eliminated the solenoid as the problem. The back track to the neutral-safety switch, and then to the ignition switch.

I replaced my ignition switch several months ago for the same problem on a 66 chevybaker engine. No problems since. Do the troubleshooting advised before changing the switch though.

If you test the Red/White small wire to the "S" Terminal of the Solenoid and get no power while someone turns the Key to "Start" then you have proven the Ign. Sw. to be at fault, unless there is a bad connection or loose wire at the Ign. Switch.

Rainy day here, so I guess I have some things to check.

            I appreciate the help!
