  • Paint: Painting Questions Avanti Red 1964 R-1

My Avanti is in the body shop for what I expect will be a pretty good paint job. The hood is off, the bumpers and chrome has been removed, and it has been sanded and the small cracks filled. My question is how to restore the non-painted items under the hood, for example, the hood hinges, latches, and clips for the wiring harness. I think the clips were painted body color, or were they the dull metal color that the hinges and latches and hood release rods are? Also, is black the correct color for the engine and manifolds? Any input would be appreciated. Please try to stay on subject, just answers and not opinions. Thanks.

I have attached photos of John Metzker's Avanti Red 1964 R-1 which I hope to emulate, and photos of my engine compartment and my 1964 R-1 before it went to the paint shop. The last photo is of "Bob's Avanti" which I downloaded from Bob's Studebaker Resource web site. I believe all cars pictured are [were] Avanti Red when they left the factory. The color seems to look different on sunny vs overcast or cloudy days.

Hood hinges should be body color.....Body# tag on right skirt should also be body color.

They were originally plated from whomever supplied them and the paint had a hard time sticking. The body tags are zinc, so the same thing applies... paint often is flaked off of them. Ed is right, they are SUPPOSED to be painted. The wire clips and latches were bright cadmium plated (not yellow cadmium).

Yep, hinges painted, body tag painted, all the latches, wire clips throttle linkages etc are silver cad plated.

What's the best way to restore the cadmium plated parts? Clean, remove dirt, and a little bit of steel wool?

No, actually "Bobs '64" is Avanti Maroon, which is Burgundy, not '63 & early '64 Avanti Red which is Maroon.

Since on Avantis almost anything goes due to the ongoing changes, and special Orders I have heard of a few later '64's being painted this much better looking '63 Avanti "Red" the old standby; Honduras Maroon Metallic GM/Corvette Color.

However it is true that John's Avanti looks lighter and more red in direct Sunlight as in the Pic with the hood up, but as you can see in the others in shade or cloudy skys it is darker Maroon, ie '63 Avanti "Red".

Reds have a poor hiding factor. A dark primer will darken the red, and a light primer will lighten the red. The factory used a red primer on the Avanti giving an accurate presentation of the red colour.

I bead blasted mine, then took it all to the plater that I use for yellow zinc, they did all of the under hood parts for about $150.

Honduras Maroon is probably the color I want, as the 1963 R2 I sold last summer was a "really red" like John's car. BTW, THAT CAR (my "sold R2") is still sitting in a garage here in town, along with FIVE OTHER CARS stored by the "scammer" who sold my R2 to a guy whose knowledge of mechanics might be limited to how to replace a windshield wiper. I got $12,200 cash for the car, the "scammer" turned it around to the "patsy" for $17,500, for which the poor guy had to take out a $10,000 loan, and the owner of the garage won't release any of the cars until the "scammer" or someone else pays $35 per month storage for any car released from his locked garage. The "sold R2" has been in storage for 11 months, and some of the cars have been stored for up to FIVE YEARS. My "sold R2" is #6 in the uploaded photos.
