I'm going to pull my 289 from the 63' Cruiser, and am thinking engine & tranny as a unit. I have an adapter plate that attaches to the Stromberg 2bbl intake manifold and want to know if things are strong enough to hold the combo ??? Comments ? Suggestions ? I've separated the combo @ tranny, @ bellhousing but never all together...?

I would not do it. I use a single chain from two intake manifold bolts to pull it very nose high. I think I use the two behind the crossover port or one in front, one to the rear.

I'm with JDP. I use the intake manifold bolts, but I have rented an engine crane with a leveler hookup so you can fine tune the engine attitude as you pull it. I finally bought a 2-ton crane and a leveler from Harbor Freight on sale for under $200 total.quote:Originally posted by jackb

I have used the adapter you are talking about, is it the plate that has four holes and you bolt to where the carb would go, I have done this with a SBC motor and it works however that's just with the motor. I don't know if it will support the trans also, the leveler is a marvel everyone should have one if you are a one man operation. Be careful and good luck!

Never had any luck with the leveler, I need the slack in the chain to tilt the motors front down to clear the rear x member. next time one of you comes down, I'll give you the leveler.

StudeDave and I used the leveler to pull the engine/trans out of my Lark. Worked like a charm. It is definately a two-person job, though, and three is even better. We also employed Dave's lightweight roller jack to keep the trans tailshaft from dropping to the ground when the crossmember came out, and a 1x12 plank for the trans to slide forward on as the engine was lifted.
The intake lifting adapter is unnecessary. Just pull the intake and use the four corner bolts with some thick fender washers to attach directly to the heads. Safer and easier.
