  • Transmission / Overdrive: Dumb question, answer and feel smart!!!

I may know where a truck 5 speed is sitting on the outskirts of town. And I have two questions.
First now I figure it's an obvious no, but my brother wanted to know why, and I don't enough about them to say. But he was wondering and I guess on the crazy off chance it would somehow work I am too. Could you use one of these truck five speeds in a car. I know that even if it worked there are way way better car five speed trannies out there I could use this is mostly a matter of curiousity. Just saying it will bolt up, how awful would it make the car drive and shift. Now I thought it would be definite no, but am I right since, I really know nothing about these trannies, and moreover aside from logic why wouldn't it work? Oh and I'd be pulling from a parts truck so I'd have everything there.

Question two. If I could get this dirt cheap with all it's bell housing, and everything. Is it worth very much? I know there are super rare but that doesn't always equal valuable. What could I get out of one in the real world market.
I'm mostly worried about parts I want not ones to sell, but if they are worth a lot and I can it super cheap then I might do it.

You could, but it wouldn't be worth the hassle. A good swap is where something is gained. Other than the bellhousing I see nothing here.

Is it the type of five speed with a overdrive fifth gear, or one with a compound low gear and fifth is straight through?

I would think that the overdrive model would be easier to resell than the compound low model.

What Roy said, in spades. There are 5-speeds, and there are 5-speeds. Fifth direct, fifth over (and not much over), and crash boxes, and synchronized. The US6 truck had a five-speed with overdrive, but it's not synchro, as far as I know. A five-speed overdrive with synchromesh in 2,3,4, and 5 would be a desirable item for those of us with medium trucks, or even big pickups. Five gears under 1:1? Not so much, unless you are into pulling stumps.

And forget about using the truck tranny in a car. Not worth the hassle.

Farmer had it around his yard for farmer stuff. Says in fifth gear it was turning 2k I think it was a 259 or 289. He sold it to guy someone bought the place where this and supossedly several other studes are sitting. Guy who now now owns them knows nothing about studes but there still there. That is all I know.

Yes, lot's of truck guys want the 5-speed.

No, you wouldn't want it as a gift in a car. Terrible heavy slow shifting noisy.

Maybe, pass on the info to the Studebaker Truck Farmers.

I plan to go to this place if it's real looking for a tranny I might actually want, but wondered if it would be worth saving if it's still there. I hope I might find something good here but I doubt it. What cars did the t85 come in? And what does it's tag say. Who knows there might be one out there. And what cars would have a short tailshaft tranny? So I can leave my drive shaft for now. I figured bolting the five speed under a car was possible..... but would make it drive like well, a commercial truck.

My 62 Champ has the 5 speed overdrive trans with its "Rube Goldberg" shift pattern. There is a reason why they put the shift pattern on the glove box. My 61 Champ has the "granny gear" 4 speed. Nice starting in 2nd-like a 3 speed all syncro trans but with the 4.09 gears out back it is revving its little heart out at 60. Neither is good for a car. Plus these transmissions are HEAVY. A FOM is light compared to these. Do what Jack said & put it on the truck forum page. Make a couple bucks for yourself if its a direct 5 speed, more if it's a 5 speed overdrive, but you'll need everything to go with it in order to sell it.

I have a GM toploader in Pinkie and I like it even with that compound low but I compensted with 3.00 rear end gears. Yes it is heavy but it sure handles the horses. IN any case get as much of that stuff as you can or introduce the guy to Studes so it aint crushed.

V-8 cars usually take a T-86, except for the ones with super motors, which take T-85.

1957 was the last year for the short tail shaft transmission and two piece drive shaft in cars. 1958 started the long tail shaft and one piece drive shaft in cars. Transmission internals are pretty much the same, with the obvious exception of the output shaft, in short and long tail transmissions.

If you're looking to put a 5-spd in your car, the T-5 might be a good, low-cost option for you.

When you say GM top loader are you talking about? I thought about trying to use a chevy five speed where fifth is OD or really any five speed set this way. That way I'd have the feel of a four speed with the highway gear for economy.
