  • Electrical: Wiring diagrams

I have a '59-64 shop manual that I bought from SASCO 18 years ago. I'm looking at rewiring my '63 GT Hawk. The manual has a wiring diagram for the car, but there is a further piece of documentation in the book. The heading is "WIRING DIAGRAMS" subtitle "electrical circuits information. It lists each circuit number, the wire gage, color and circuit title. Some really valuable information as far as I am concerned. BUT... there is only one page like this, and it is for a 62 model. (Do I have pages missing?) Since I am a wiring rookie, having this page for a 63 would be a great help, especially the wire color key. Anybody out there have one for '63???? Where can I find one, assuming they exist? Not sure I can tackle the job without it.

@bhapner- the page you are looking for is probably black and white and would be hard to read, unless you are a wiring expert.I'm not saying that to be condecending, as I am a wiring rookie myself.Do yourself a favor and go to:

ClassicCarWiring.com. They have a bunch of wiring diagrams in stock and if they don't have yours listed they can still get you one (as in the case of my '65).I got a LAMINATED 18"x24" color-coded easy to read wiring diagram for about $30. I highly recommend you getting one of these for your car.You won't regret it.It will keep your electrical circuits from becoming an electrical circus, lol. Their e-mail is info@classiccar wiring.com

Thanks for the info. the page I am referring to is a list. It shows the wire color (ie. Wht w/blk tr) Wonder if the diagram you refer to has the trace color too?

I recently purchased one of his diagrams for the 58 PH. One thing not on there is wire size. I told him this is very handy when building a harness and even sometimes chasing a wire down in a harness. He is going to add that info to the next ones. I sent him a scanned copy of the Studebaker manual wiring diagram along with the accessories wiring page.

All good information. Thanks. I went to the ClassicCarWiring website, they do have the '63-4 diagrams. I never thought of building the harness myself. Had planned on using one from Stude Intl. which should have the correct wire sizes.

.....That's what I did. With a factory correct harness and a good wiring diagram, it should be a 'plug and play' operation.Notice I said SHOULD because there are a few wires that aren't assigned to anything but by process of elimination you can find out what they are.Examples of this are the overdrive selonoid (sp.) wire and a few accessory grounds.Good luck with your project!!

Kdancy, pick up the current issue of "Hot Rod" magazine, June 2013 ( there is a red T bucket on the cover), and in there you will find an article that will walk you through the calculations for the correct wire size for a given circuit. Not knowing if you are a restoration purest or not I'd make a couple of suggestions. I'd urge you to use relays in the rewiring you are doing for things like the headlight circuit, AC if you have it, brake lights ,( if you have a hydraulic brake light switch ) After determining the correct wire size , using the formulas in the article, I'd up the wire size by one for the Headlight circuit and the Charging circuit, to mention a few, if you have any thoughts of using new headlights, larger Amp Generator/Alternator etc..
