I love to work on my Champion and it always perplexes me. The 1950's steering box has a wire sticking out of it. What is it for and what does it do? thank you in advance for any help. I have the shop manual, but that doesn't seem to help---- cause I don't know what to call it.......Rick

That is the horn wire. It runs up the hollow steering shaft to a spring-loaded contact under the horn button. When you press the button it shorts that contact to ground and BEEP. Over time the wire insulation cracks and frays and evenutally shorts inside the shaft somewhere. This makes the horn sound continuously and the frantic owner cuts or disconnects the wire. That is where you are today. You can replace the wire by using the old wire to pull a string through the shaft then use the string to pull a new wire back thorugh. I have not actually done that so I am not sure of the details but search this forum and you will probably find a story or two. I tried to find a good picture of this wire on my car but only found this:

The steering box wrapped in foil to protect it from my pressure washer but you can see the wire snaking past the motor mount bound for the horn relay.

I replaced the horn wire on my 1950 Champion. As I recall, it's just a 16 gauge wire with a pin on the bottom end and what looks like a rivet head on the top which contact the horn button. The steering shaft is bored out such that a wire can be pushed through but a feeder wire would not be a bad idea. There is an illustration in the Chassis Parts Manual but if you didn't know what you were looking it would not stand out. The push connector at the bottom must be small enough to go through the steering shaft.
