  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: 1955 President Speedster Tach

Im having an issue with my 1955 President Speedster Tach. I have no clue why its not registering RPM, with the engine running at idle and with the throttle opened up a little. What would be your reconmendation on troubleshooting this problem? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    1. Cable and connnectors
    2. Brushes in the drive module
    3. Lubrication of synchro motor and tach head

Where is the synchro motor located? And where does the cable get fed to on the engine?

Back of the tachometer head and at the added piece on the distributor.

Sorry got such a late response, the car is now parked with a failed Hydro-Vac. But am planning on here in the next few weeks and will be replacing it, along with getting the Tachometer working properly.

Is the Tachometer ran off the Coil? And what piece is added to the distributor?

I'm not clear on what exactly your pointing out.

Dylan, there is a approximately 1" high drive unit which fits between the distributor body and the distributor cap. It sends a signal via a three-wire cable to the synchronous motor behind the tach.

If pecking on the face with finger tips makes it start working at idle, then its usually OK above idle, but sometimes falls off when coming off idle, it just needs oiled. Remove the tac and take off the back cover. Use 3-In-1 oil to strategically place a few drops on the exposed rotating components and spin it a few times with your fingertips. Reassemble & install, and it will be good for another 50 years, plus the needle will not be as "sticky" during operation.
