  • Fuel System: Tools required to rebuild '50 9G Carburetor ?

I know nothing about carbs. But I have a mechanic buddy who says he will help rebuild mine. I have all the parts/kit. But he is concerned because the Parts and Shop Manual indicate special tools are needed to properly rebuild and tune. Are these tools necessary? Are they to be found anywhere today? Thanks, Robert Fort Wayne, IN

Most of the special tools are for removing the jets, which you only need to do if you are at a significantly different altitude than the carb was originally jetted for. Not something to worry about usually. usually a "rebuild" is a simple disassembly and cleaning. I just leave the parts alone that I can't take out.

Most of the problems that require a "rebuild/cleaning" fall into these categories:
    1. crud in various passages
    2. leaking or hardened gaskets
    3. wear on the man throttle shaft that allows air to enter where it should not enter. This one requires a machinist to make bushings, but one and two are easy

I tend to agree with Radio Roy. I rebuilt my carburetor with tools on hand, then some years later had it redone by a professional. The end results were the same. Just sure you get everything back in place.
