I posted the following in a thread called "1961 Hawk Trunk Lights or Am I Nuts." You can find that thread in the Advanced Search mode but the following is the meat of perhaps what you are looking for.

Hawk64 you are correct! I took the thing apart S-L-O-W-L-Y and sure enough a little mercury switch was in there. I replaced the wire and all is good.

To STUDELOVER: The trunk light was made by John Hobbs Corp. Springfield IL.. They are out of business. I found the an article on their closing which ended with the following: Hobbs in Springfield
John W. Hobbs opened what is now the Honeywell Hobbs plant at 1034 E. Ash St. in 1938 to produce accessories for the automotive industry, including the first electronically wound clock.
Honeywell International has owned the plant since 2002.

Here's some pics of the trunk and hood lights on a loaded R1 64 Daytona hardtop Ed George owned for a while.
I have an NOS hood or maybe it was a trunk light somewhere that I bought in South Bend a couple years back so they're out there. I think there was a thread a while back saying that the hood lights aren't much different than what GM offered in the sixties. They are being reproduced.
I think most Studebakers didn't get these lights back then because of casos.

I bought a box of 8 under hood light kits a few years ago on eBay...ridiculously cheap. I have just one left for my 63' with install instructions. I believe the light installed just in front of the driver's windshield area....

Do you still have the copy of the instructions?

It appears that the trunk light might be practical, but for anyone who has an original hood light, do they actually help?

I ask because, I did have one of the newfangled retractable lights in our Suburban and if ever there was a modern accessory that is practical, that is high on my personal favorites list.

LeoH. Actually Ford Had an under hood Trouble lite that resembled a teardrop cowl lite. It was pressed tin and when needed You would twist the lens end from the mount and You could hang the lite from the small hook that was attached. I have One that's factory stock in My 1966 F100, But I've seen them in ford cars from early 60's and up especially in Ford and Mercury service vehicles such as Police units.

Purchased a pair of Mustang trunk/under hood lights - They are also activated by angle. Seems they were about $10 each, pretty reasonable. Got them from one of the suppliers that specilize in Mustang replacement parts (NPD? maybe). There are a bunch of Mustang suppliers on-line.
