  • Front Main Seal Problem

    I started my car today to check the timing and saw a stream of oil coming out of the front seal. After taking the timing cover off I noticed that three of the four screws that hold the seal in are missing. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Can I just get larger sheet metal screws and loctite them in?

    Wow, that sucks. I wonder where those screws are.[B)]

    I guess the first step would be to figure out why they came out. Did
    the holes strip out, did the screws just work out due to heating up
    and cooling down? Did they break off? Time to do the neoprene seal
    upgrade fix?

      David, You can drill and tap the holes. I redid mine with 10/32 buttonhead machine screws.Seal them with loctite thread sealant.What kind of shape is the felt seal in?

        I was intrigued with your snapshots of the machine work you did on your engine. The threaded "freeze" plugs were of interest. How did you treat the threads to make sure you have continuous access?
        Also, back in the 70's, I had the problem of oil pump cavitation in my 63 GT. I attributed it to heat, for I lived in West Texas. Ran 6 qts of oil to aid the problem. Seemed to help quite a bit.
        Also, learned early on that the front seal screws had to have locktite on them. The story about that is ugly.

          Thanks everyone, I got my car back together on Sunday. I drilled the holes slightly deeper and threaded them to 10/32. Then loctited in 3/8" long screws. It didn't leak on my drive to work today so hopefully that fixed it.

          Tom, the screws just worked their way out. The threads in the cover looked fine. I would have upgraded to the neoprene seal, but I didn't have time to order one. This car is my daily driver.

          Karl, did what you said, and installed a new seal. The old one looked fine, but I had a new one so I figured I might as well put it in.

          Chuck, I epoxied in the set of freeze plugs I have in my car right now. I haven't decided what to do with the new engine I am building. Not to worried about getting them out later. They screw in with a 3/4" breaker bar. I am in the process of building a six quart oil pan for my new engine. I want to make sure it will survive 7000rpm.
