  • Interior: How Does Accel Pedal Mount on Carpet??

Working on installing the carpet in my '54 4-door sedan this holiday weekend. On the mid-'50s sedans, did the accelerator pedal bracket (where it bolts to the floorpan) originally sit on top of the carpet, or was it under the carpet with a slit cut in the carpet for the pedal portion to protrude through?

I've always installed mine through the carpet, but I don't know if that's correct or not.

My 51 has it's original carpet. I just went and looked. The pedal is attched to the floor and goes through the carpet. I bet 54 was the same.

I went ahead and put the pedal mount on the floor and carefully cut a slot in the carpet. To my relief, it came out fine.

Now another question: is the carpet supposed to overlap the bottom edge of the firewall pad by about an inch, or should it tuck underneath the firewall pad? The Shop manual says that it should go under the steering post seal (the big rubber rectangular piece) but doesn't say anything about the firewall pad. My firewall pad is original/fragile and I'm afraid I may break the edges if I try to push the carpet up under it.

The trials of trying to replace something that you did not take out!!

No Studebaker knowledge here, but I would just lay the carpet on top of the firewall pad.
