  • Transmission / Overdrive: Automatic transmission Model DG-250-M

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I have posted on the forum. I'm still in the process of building my '55 studebaker e-series truck (1/2 ton) and progress is good!

I have replaced the old line 6 engine with manual tranny, with a '55 V8 and automatic transmission.
    Model D-250-M Borg Warner.

On the tail of the tranny, opposite side to the gear linkage, there is a solanoid.
I expect it to be for an overdrive but I'm not sure. What is this solanoid for?

Also, it used to be a 6 volt car. I'm changing it to 12 volts. Will this affect this solanoid. Obviously I want to prevent a 'nuclear meltdown' So if i need a resistor, please advise!

Thanks for all comments, advise and knowledge in advance! Cheers from The Netherlands,
    John-Paul

There are no electric contols that affect the Transmission on a Detroit Gear Division of BW, 3 band Studebaker Automatic Drive Trans. DG Series.

There are Anti-creep switches etc. for the Brake System, most are disconnected and no longer used. I would not worry about them, they were for beginners with Automatic Transmissions in 1950 when most cars had Manual Transmissions that did not know to hold the brake when stopped!

thanks for the quick respons. Just to double check...so if I understand correctly I can leave this solanoid disconnected for its only purpose it to prevent the car from rolling while in drive without pressing the gas pedal?

On the tail of the tranny, opposite side to the gear linkage, there is a solenoid.

If memory serves, what you are describing is a flat disc with two terminals sticking rearward. This isn't a solenoid, but a pressure switch. It is for the anit-creep unit and can be ignored.
