  • Steering: Front Crankshaft Seal

What is a good (correct) way to install the seal into the timing gear cover?

Make sure everything is cleaned out of the hole then use something thin and flexible to "work" the felt seal back into the hole. Don't use anything that will cut the seal up. I used a chemical spatula which is really handy for lots of detail work. At first it will look like it can't possibly fit but eventually it will work its way in. Once I could not get it to go in any more I soaked the seal with oil then took a deep well socket and used it to mush the seal in farther. Eventually I got to the point where the pully would go in and called it good enough. No leaks!

I cheated on the last one, and removed the four tiny screws that hold the retainer on from behind. Once the retainer is removed, it just fits right in. Used lock-tite on the screws to re-install them. I always soak the felt seal in oil first. Also, there is a drain hole in the retainer, and of course it goes back on the bottom.

Screws sure would be nice. On my Champion 6 the cover is spot-welded together. No screws!
