Hawk pop out rear vent windows

  • Other: Hawk pop out rear vent windows

    New to Studebaker's.

    Can anyone tell me how to properly prop open the back vent windows? When propped open they do not stay locked into open position there must be some type of trick i am guessing.

    The latch should open far enough to go past half way, that is the middle of the latch past the line between the end pivots. Then it should hold itself open.

      fixed em

      spent 20 minutes bending them back into what i think was the shape. seems like someone pushed them as tightly shut as humanly possible or they just stretched out from sitting who knows.

            1959 Sorry for the late re as im new. bending them possibly was a bad idea, as one latch broke the other day as i was checking to see if it still worked. I did see it coming, as i had to bend one latch a few times in order to work properly, the (flat) thin middle section in-between the pins cracked in half. I got lucky on the first shot with the other vent, it works mint still. Im a huge fan of air vents, hopefully all 6 will be flying.

              Couple of things to consider (on a Hawk coupe)...
              The way the designers envisioned things....
              You would open the front fender air inlet vents.
              Then you would open the front wing vents.
              The airflow would pull the heat off the firewall and the hot air would exit out the front vent windows.
              That way you would not get the hot air in your face, or mess up your gal's 1950's beehive hairdoo...

              Opening the rear vent widows helps if there are rear seat passengers, but pulls the inlet air further back.

              Opening the side windows (at speed) can cause enough suction inside the cabin that you can suck the headliner down hard enough to bend the steel bows.
              (ask me about that one... Drove from South Bend to Itasca one day holding the headliner up the whole way, with my right arm).

              I would be sure to add insulation to the floor and firewall area as soon as possible.

                Howdy Jeff - very enlightening and makes sense: does the same principal apply to a 1963 Avanti (or would the excess firewall heat overwhelm the front wing vents?!) Bob
