  • Transmission / Overdrive: 64 crusier with 61 auto trans surging?

My 64 Crusier appears to have a 61 259 and I assume a 61 automatic. The trans searches back and forth while crusing at highway speeds. Local tranny shop suggested that a spring on the tranny linkage is broke allowing it to search back and forth. I did not find a spring down at the trans linkage but there were two at the bellcrank for the carb. One is a return spring for the carb from linkage to a tab on the thermostat housing. The other was just laying on the intake manifold on one end and hooked to the bellcrank. Is that the tranny spring the tranny shop told me about. They are closed for the week end so I can't go back to them and I want to cruise this week end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To:studeluvr,---- That second spring is really just a 'backup' return spring for the throttle. I believe it should connect to a clip held under one of the rocker arm cover hold down nuts.

You use both "surging" and "searching" to define your problem. Which is it? To me, surging is probably an engine, not transmission, problem and searching means that the transmission is changing gears down and up.

Yep searching is probably more accurate. If I step down on the go pedal it does not act up but just cruising along it seems to search to decide to either shift again or not.
