  • Transmission / Overdrive: Floppy, Sloppy shift lever

I mentioned this in a previous post but I took a video so I thought I'd start a new post.

The shift lever on my 62 GT is very loose - it shifts gears ok but it is difficult with the lever flopping all over the place.

    What's the fix for this?

    thanks for the help

First thing I'd do is replace the grommets...
Next see how much slack is in the column parts.....

I agree with Tom; standard shift or automatic will make a big difference in diagnosis.

The fix was previously described in your original string here:

              That would be Post #3.

Your shift tube may be able to be built up with a welder. Then ground down to original size. There are little tab-like projections on the tube. You won't know what's worn until you take it apart.

I had a 53 champ sport coupe in 1960 with 3 spd overdrive that was like Tom B's. I put in a new shift tube which helped somewhat but it was still a trick to shift. You had to hold it toward the steering when going out of first and go a little past the H bar toward reverse then drop it back down to the H bar then go over to the 2-3 and up to second. With practice you can get good at it. 73 Avanti

Your car, your money, your decision. However, the first thing I do to any Stude I've owned since 1962 is install a good floor shift. That alone doubles the driving pleasure.

My 62GT with T85 tranny (much heavier duty that T86) and "three on a tree" shifts as smooth as a 1960 six cylinder, 40,000 mile Lark I once owned. Just gotta take the column off, totally disassemble, clean, replace as needed (not rocket science), lube with grease, and put back together. Then make sure linkage rods are adjusted correctly and not scraping each other or the body. It will shift smooth as silk. I do not believe they were ever any good for speed shifting though.
