  • Other: Engine and transmission number question

I have a V-8 and automatic in a 2R5. The engine serial number is V589544 and transmission is 71354. Using the manual, I think they are both from a 1963 Lark. The engine being a 259 and the transmission a Flightomatic. There is only a small amount of white appearing paint on the transmission tag. From the manual I conclude it is an AS-10-5P.

Am I correct and do you have other information on these?

    Thanks
    Norm

    UPDATED! Studebaker V/8 Engine Identification

Yes, it is a 1963 259 c.i.d. V-8, that is a good one because it has the Full Flow,
Spin-on Oil Filter on the right rear of the block, just above the Oil pan.

That Trans. number if it is the one impression stamped into the nameplate is just the Serial Number, means nothing. Most all Parts that could be needed are available, and Parts and Proceedures for most all Standard, Long Tail, Cast Iron Case Borg Warner Automatics used in Studes. are the same from '58 to '64 and more. There is no need to further I.D. it, than as I have described here. It is an AS-10 Flight-O-Matic.

            Unless you missed a digit, that is a 1951 Commander 232 V8 (V41195).

thanks for the info. the no. supplied is correct. but it beats me as to how such an engine would have been fitted to a 61 model. is there any other method to identify the engine - say for instance removing the tappet covers and checking for any unique markings.
              regards

Krish, if your V41195 number was found at the rear of the engine next to the distributor, it is definitely a 1951-52 engine. Beginning in 1953 the stamped number was moved to the front.
