Do a search for "flanged axles" and "Dana 44". You'll have weeks of reading.

The change to flanged axles occurred during the 1965 model year, so all 66s had flanged axles. The parts book does not specify the date or the 1965 serial number of the change. Most 6-cylinder cars got model 27 axles, and some 6s and all V8s got model 44s. Dana 44 axles were used in many other vehicles, including Jeeps. The search function may turn up the discussion of a direct interchange with another make, but I'm not aware of one.

How do you tell the difference btween a Dana 44 and a model 27 Rear diff?
As I just heard about a "27" for the first time today... in an attempt to find out what the sending unit on the filler plug was for??

The designation is usually cast into the center section.

Right side, below the tube, around 5 o'clock. Illustration and a list of model applications of each are in the parts books.
