  • What master cylinder to get?

I want to buy a dual master cylinder to use in the 51 I am working on.
It needs to be frame mountable, I make my own adapter to be able to do that.
The master cylinder must be for drum brakes only.
It must not be for a power brakes.
The outlet ports have to face away from the frame, (I think they call them as facing toward the engine).

(I used some AMC master cylinders before but than the port outlets side did not matter because I used hanging pedals and the master cylinders were mounted on the firewall inside the engine compartment.)

Does anyone know what could be usable with the above requirement?

    Thanks

    Paul

Raybestos MC56193, is a good one. I would use the Turner brake adapter. With drum brakes just use the 10# residual valves. This will work with disc or drum. Here's the one on my 53.

This one's listed for 1968 model AMC cars with manual drum brakes.

Thanks guys, the problem is that on the 51 the master cylinder mounts on the inside of the frame,
Therefore the outlets need to be on the engine side.

If you look at the Cardone picture, and compare to the picture of the mounted Raybestos 56193 above, they appear to be the same, except that the Cardone picture is "turned around 180 degrees" (I'm never going to live that down!) Its easier to make sure if you compare the other pictures by using the 'enlarge' click under the Cardone picture.

                Hi Jim
Thanks for the information, the number I found for a 76 corvette in the in RockAouto is 36367, did not find 36327.
The Raybetos has a 1/2 and 9/16 outlets.
The Dorman seem to have two 9/16 outlets.
If this is the number you used which is a better choice?
                Thanks again.

I'm changing my 61 Hawk to dual m/c also. why do I need the residual valves on a drum/ drum system? When I changed my 52 chev to a dual system, I copied my 68 Chev van and used the m/c from that. It didn't use residual valves so I didn't use them either. System worked great for the last 20 some years.

                    Residual Valve Confusion

Usually when you have a Master Cylinder as the one shown here for AMC with same size Front and Rear reservoirs, it is for DRUM Brakes, and should be good to go as is, with built-in residual valves, if you used it on a Disc. front setup you would want to remove the residual valve on the REAR chamber for the FRONT brakes. But I would not, because Disc. Brake Units with Larger Rear Reservoirs are available for newer AMC's.

Of course I refer to Front/Rear as it SHOULD be mounted on a AMC Matador or Ambassador, if you are installing it under the floor/backwards on a '53-'64 C or K body, it's reversed. Easier to understand that way.

No confusion here on the residual check valves. As a matter of fact my M/C was new and it did not
have any residual valves in it. Like I said earlier "READ THE TECH ARTICLES" This M/C will work with
either disc or drum. Mine is disc , and I used 2# front and rear. Used what the tech articles say for drum.
But use some. again Read the tech articles.

The residual check valves should be 2# for disc and 10# for drum. They ARE included with my kit, along with an adjustable proportioning valve.
My deluxe kits include NEW Raybestes Master Cylinders, I do not trust the rebuilt ones! That is MY opinion! (and my liability too)

Paul, My mistake! Yes the M/C is 36367! I'm glad my supplier knows what to order! <G> I just ordered 6 of the 36327's and he sent me the 36367's!

                        Jim

I stumbled on to 67 Ford Mustang master cylinders at rock auto that have
the right side ports and manual drum brake applications.
Thanks Jim and everyone else for the help.
