  • 1950 Champion Fuses

Another question about this new Champion I've befriended, Is there a fuse box on these cars? I am not finding one or any info about this online or in the manual, just indications that fuses and circuit breakers are in-line. My primary issue is, while the tail lights and turn indicators work, the brake lights do not and I am suspicious the fuse is the culprit.
    Thanks
    Jeff

The most likely culprit is the stop light switch. It screws into the rear of the master cylinder, and used hydraulic pressure to close the electrical contacts for the brake lamps. These do go bad, and are available at most auto parts stores, as they were universally used for a long time.

Try cleaning the master cylinder and brake switch before buying a new one.

To answer your initial question, no, there isn't a fuse block on this car. There are a couple circuit breakers under the dash. Radio, turn signals and cigar lighters have in-line fuses. I can't think of anything else thats fused.

Two year old thread, so I hope no one minds that I piggyback here -- On my 50 Commander, neither of the turn signal dash lights come on, though you can hear the sound, and they light up outside. Could the fuse, mentioned above, be bad, or would nothing signal related work with the fuse bad? I switched out one dash signal bulb with a new one, and it did not light up. Electrical stuff always stumps me...

If the fuse for the turn signals were blown both your signals and your dash indicators would not function, same circuit. As to why the indicators won't function, that you will have to trace out with a test light or volt meter back to the switch.

Okay, thanks for the info, Frank. So either I have new bulbs that are bad, or something else. I'm just not good at working on mazes of wiring, so I'll probably have to find some help on this one. Thanks.

You may have gotten a new bad bulb. It's also possible a wire to the tell-tale lights has broken or slipped out of its terminal or the tell-tale sockets themselves have lost their +ground.
