  • Identifying a T98 Transmission

How do you tell a T98 from a T9? There should be some kind of ID stamped or cast into the case. Thanks.

    Cast in to the case.

Brad- Good. However I have the type of sensor suite (eyes) and central processing unit (brain) that doesn't see what it is looking at. Where is the cast-in ID (top, bottom, side etc). Thanks! Phil B.

Yes all Borg Warner manual CAR Transmissions have raised numbers/letters cast into the right side of the case, Trucks Left side, easy to read when clean, or reasonably close to clean. If you ever drive a T-98 you will know it, they have nice smooth as silk syncros in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Of course Compound Low does not need one, as no tranny does, in my opinion, because you always are stopped (or SHOULD BE) when shifting into it.

Update: Thanks Wolfie for reminding me, I have looked at so many car trannies, I could not remember that the Trucks were marked on the other side, I haven't looked at my T-98 in a long time since I replaced it with the New Process 5 O.D.

Just looked at the T-98 and the cast number is in the same place as Ricks T-9. Drivers side of the trans right behind the top trans to bellhousing bolt. Steve

Thanks all. Now I know. Just pull the floorboard cover and there the ID is. However, StudeRich made an interesting aside, saying he had installed a New Process 5 OD transmission. That would be really neat if one would fit my 2R10 with Champion engine. Both synchro AND freeway-sensible engine revs. So my question to StudeRich is whether I should consider one. I live in Tacoma WA, so could easily come up to see his truck and talk. What about it? Best, Phil B. <philbirkeland@gmail.com> 253.564.9109 (h) or 253.279.9724 (c).

Studebaker only installed 5-speed transmissions behind V8s. I am not aware that there is a bell housing or conversion kit that will match the big, heavy 5-speed trans to the Champion 6. It's also worth noting that the New Process 5-spd/OD has an OD gear ratio of .82. The Warner 3-spd/OD has an OD gear ratio of .722. The 3-spd/OD delivers about 10% lower RPMs in top gear.

That is correct, the New Process was only used behind a V8. What amazed me is the Four Speed T-98 Clutch Housing looks identical to the 5 Speed, UNTILL you check it's thickness! The Trans. bolt patterns are the same but the different 5 speed Part Number, gets you a much thicker housing.

Then there's the Trans. cases, there a FOUR of those. The 1/2 & 3/4 Ton Trucks without Band Parking Brakes get one without the hole drilled and tapped for the Brake, of course 1 Ton and larger have band Brakes, and the OD and the DD (Overdrive and Direct Drive) each get a case making (4).
