  • Yet another Bell Housing Dial In question.

I know, I know, this topic has just about been done to death. I understand the whole dialing in process, and being a fitter machinist have the gear and ability for it not to be a big job. But, my question is - if you remove and reassemble the same bellhousing on the same block surely the locating dowels will ensure a fit within 0.001", even less. Of course allowing for it to be the 1st time apart since factory assembley. (In this instance I'll be seperating a FOM from a 289 '62 GT engine). Please point out if I am on the wrong track.

    Matt,
Your thinking is correct & the bell housing should mate back with the engine block within the tolerances specified. The problems that have occured over many many years is when the engine or auto trans have been changed & the owner has not dial gauged the new combination due to ignorance or laziness. Then the converter plates have undue stress placed on them.
Trust you had a nice time at Phoenix. Jim.

      'morning Jim,

Thank you for confirming my theory. Having used locating dowels, parallel & tapered, over the years to align machine components to the same tolerances, I just couldn't see how re-dialing would be necessary at each re-assembley, (allowing for any ware of course). But what you said makes perfect sense.

Yes, we had a great time at Glendale. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone, after hearing my accent, asked if you had attended ;-) I'm sorry we didn't catch up, but I'm sure we'll meet around the traps sometime in the future. Maybe later this year, my wife is planning a trip to Melbourne sometime in Nov / Dec, and I'm sure I'll be seeing Brian and Leon while she does her 'Arty' stuff. (She is a Textile artist).
