  • floor shifter for a 3 speed OD

I have a 53 pickup with a 3 speed OD trans. I'm missing parts for the column shift and I'd like to put a floor shift in it. Any suggestions on what to use as a floor shift??

Is it a T-85 or T-86? Answer depends on the trans...

Don't think the T85 was used in '53, so it is either a T86 or T96.

Whichever, most of the Hurst and Mr. Gasket shifter kits are for cars and position the shifter too far to the rear and off to the side. I spent a lot of time fabricating a mounting bracket to use the Hurst Competition Plus shifter for my truck which gets the shifter up forward and toward the middle. If you have the fab skills, I'll try to talk you through it. It will also require fabricating a sheet metal dog house to cover the hole in the tunnel.

I do have one Hurst Indy Truck Shifter kit which works pretty well and doesn't require much fabrication. If you want it for $75, let me know.

If it's a T-86 (with the top cover) it's not too hard to change to a Jeep T-90 top shifter; just a couple minor mods. Here's one on eBay:

56 Stude- wondering, did you determine which trans. you have?

Must be 56stude lost interest, but for anyone else here's a T-90 shifter, currently at a low price, 2 days left.

Both the T-86 and T-96 have top covers. In what model truck, behind what engine?

Definitely does appear to be a BIG 6 (Commander) Engine from what I can see of it. It has a 6 bolt top cover which is a T-86, sometimes in Trucks, they can also be T-90, but I think those were used on small 6 Champion Engines.

What matters is the six bolt floor shifter WILL fit.

There will be issues to overcome because it will not shift to Reverse when Overdrive is engaged without a internal mod to cure it.

No reverse in OD is nothing new. He can either use the cable to disengage the OD or make a seperate shifter for it like I did in one of my Tcabs.

I'd argue against the bad science of making a vehicle so only the owner/builder can drive it. Inevitably, there will come a time when someone else will get in to drive the vehicle and either bad noises will come from the transmission or he/she will be stuck because reverse doesn't work. BTDT, never again!
