  • 51 Champion How to Polarize Generator

Good morning. Got all my work done, generator is back on. My terminals are unmarked on my voltage regulator, so how do I polarize the generator correctly? Only the left-hand of the three terminals has "B" scratched next to it.

Also, is it necessary to re-polarize the generator every time the battery is removed, or only when the generator is disconnected? I've seen it described both ways - maybe both apply?

Photos of the regulator (system is still 6V, positive ground).

I hope that this can be read...it looks like your regulator is different from the Champion example that they depict...

Thanks, Scotty, I had that diagram from the shop manual, but eventually found a diagram in there of which terminal is which on the VR itself (which are not labeled on my VR). I'll give that a try using that. It
shows B to the left, F in the center, and A on the right. Thanks!

Gents, is it necessary to re-polarize when I take the battery out, or just when the generator wires are disconnected? I've seen it written both ways, and maybe it applies to both??

My interpretation is when the wires are disconnected from the generator...think about it...I can't remember anybody re-polarizing their generator after a battery change...the service manual seems to support this thought...

I have never, ever re-polarized a generator and at one point we had three vehicles sharing one battery! I think you only have to do this if someone hooks the battery up backwards. Run it and see what happens!

Thanks, guys, I eventually found a line drawing of the voltage regulator in the shop manual that showed which terminal is which, and used that. Works fine.
