  • 1946 M-5 Serial Number Question

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me, I just purchased a 1946 M-5 pickup and according to the ID tag screwed into the upper window frame it is Serial No 5155. I could not find this ID number on the California pink slip. Is there anyplace else that I could look to verify the Serial Number. I found a number on the engine on the front drivers side lip just below the head that reads 715401. I also looked underneath and found 1389 stamped on the x-member in front of the rear end. Is this the serial number? Thanks in advance for the help.

The starting serial number for '46 M-5 was approx. M5-5001 and the engine number should start 1M-???? The engine number stamped on the block indicates a 1950 Champion 170" engine. The tag shows 5 13 for model which may indicate a 1 ton mode.

Since the plate was attached by sheet metal screws,it maybe a tag from another truck.
      Studebaker spot welded their tags.
If it was a one ton truck it would be a M15

The vin plate was located on the seat riser just when yo step into the truck your toes would touch it.
        Not on the window frame!

There should also be a vin tag rivited onto the chassis just behind the front bumper mounts on the driver's side.

Your Serial No. (VIN) tag looks correct but, as Bob sid, it should be mounted on the seat riser, not on the window frame.

Thanks for all the info, I am going to go and look on the frame behind the front bumber for an additional ID tag. Now for another question, on the pink it says the "engine or ID no" is 1M5020 and that the Body Type is a "0946CPEE" with a date first sold of "00/00/46" and a Type Vehicle of "120" (see attached photo). Does this seem to make sense for a M5 truck? Thanks again for all the help
